Fascinating, great look at traditional native uses of the land and interesting insights into their preparation practices (skimming oil with a feather! Novel for sure).

This is a fantastic overview of the deep historical roots of food forestry in the Mid-South, Jonathan. Too often, discussions of food forests focus solely on their recent permaculture framing, when in reality, these agroecological systems have been cultivated and maintained by Indigenous peoples for centuries.

I especially appreciate the emphasis on commons-based governance. The shift from collectively managed landscapes to privatized landholdings under settler colonialism drastically altered both ecosystems and foodways, disrupting relationships between people, land, and sustenance. Understanding these histories is crucial—not just to honor Indigenous knowledge but to reclaim and revitalize community-based food systems that resist further capitalist enclosure.

Your work in bringing these histories to light is invaluable. Thank you for sharing such a well-researched and thoughtful piece!
